Winona Ryder, professionally Winona Ryder, was born in Winona Minnesota. The name she was given by her parents in honor of the town where they were born. Michel Horowitz was her father and Cynthia Palmer, his mother, were both authors and editors. Ryder's dad was born into an ethnically Jewish family. Ryder considers her self Jewish. The actress is the younger sister of Uria, and has half-siblings Jubal & Sunyata. Ryder's family moved to Mendocino County to California in the year she turned seven aged. They had no electricity. Ryder was a voracious book reader because there was no TV. Ryder began taking acting lessons in the American Conservatory Theatre in 1983 aged 12. Ryder landed her first film role on the large screen in 1986 after she turned 15 years older. Ryder was bullied at her high school. Ryder believed that her future as an actress would help.
